![]() ![]() On 10 August 1910 he was ordained as a priest in the Chapel of the Canons in Benevento Cathedral, in the presence of just his mother, because his father was in America. On 18 July 1909, in the church of the Morcone monastery, he received the order of the diaconate.įor health reasons again, Fra Pio remained in Pietrelcina, near his family, from January 1910 to 17 February 1916, when he was assigned to the monastery of Sant’ Anna in Foggia. Often, however, he was sent home for health reasons. On 22 January 1904, he made his profession of simple vows and was transferred to the Sant’ Elia a Pianisi ‘training centre’ (Campobasso) where, on 27 January 1907, he made his profession of solemn vows.įrom 1904-1909, he was in various monasteries in the religious province, completing his junior, secondary and theological studies. On 22 January 1903, he received the novice’s habit and took the name Fra Pio (Brother Pius). He felt resolution strongly and his growing ardor to love Him and give himself to Him entirely.Ĭapuchin Novice and Seminarist (1903-1910)įrancesco wished to become a Capuchin friar: his wish came true on 6 January 1903, when he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars Minor of the Religious Province of Sant’ Angelo-Foggia in Morcone (Benevento). At five or six years old, the Heart of Jesus appeared at the high altar: he signaled that he was approaching the altar and placed his hand on his head, as a sign of acceptance and confirmation that he was offering himself to Him and would dedicate himself to His love. One of his spiritual directors, Capuchin Father Agostino Daniele, revealed this to us in his diary, in which he wrote: “The ecstasies and apparitions began at five years of age, when he thought and felt he should devote himself to the Lord fore ever.”Īnd his other spiritual director, Father Benedetto Nardella, in some of his notes, explains: “At around five years of age he felt the need to give himself completely to God. In around 1892, at the age of five, he thought about devoting himself to God forever. When he was 12 years old, on 27 September 1899, he received the sacrament of Confirmation and made his firt Holy Communion. Indeed, in 1978, Father Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope John Paul II. In 1947, a Polish priest, Father Karol Wojtyla, visited Padre Pio, who told him he would rise to the highest office in the Church. Interest in Padre Pio’s life made him internationally known during his lifetime, and his piety and charity inspired many. Furthermore, he became known for other extraordinary spiritual gifts, including reports of his ability to “bi-locate” and having detailed knowledge of the sins of penitents in the confessional. Padre Pio received the mystical stigmata in 1916 (bleeding from the wounds of Christ), a phenomenon that has been well-documented by numerous witnesses, medical experts, and affirmed by the Vatican. He quickly became known for his piety and dedication to the Eucharist. He entered the Franciscan Capuchin order at the age of 15 and began studying for the priesthood, taking the name of “Pio” in honor of Pope Pius I. Padre Pio (Francesco Forgione) was born in 1887 to peasant farmers in Pietrelcina, Italy.
